I feel your pain. That was actually how I knew. When I make a mistake I rip back as far as possible, one time I didn't and regret it. I can't bring myself to wear the socks anymore. Sometimes I'll tell myself that even I won't notice the error and I'll knit a few more rows and I keep seeing the tiny little mistake and it drives me nuts and I end up ripping (or otherwise fixing). This is one of the reasons that I don't like toe up socks. I have yet to find a heel that satisfies my perfectionist streak.
